II. Special Report

Wuhan Qirui Pharmaceutical showcased its flagship product, Ruilang® Sofatone Dry Suspension, at this prestigious event and hosted a new-product-and-new-technology launch conference titled “The Application of Sofatone in NSAID-Induced Gastrointestinal Mucosal Injury.”

This press conference was graciously chaired by Professor Zhao Qiu from the Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, with Professor Chen Xin from the General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University serving as the keynote speaker. The event delivered a high-caliber, high-profile academic feast to the attending experts and scholars, offering new therapeutic options for clinical management of diseases associated with gastrointestinal mucosal injury. The atmosphere at the venue was intensely scholarly, and every seat was filled.

In his lecture, Professor Chen Xin pointed out that, with the aging of the population, the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases has been increasing year by year, and the use of NSAIDs has become increasingly widespread. However, NSAIDs are a double-edged sword: while they effectively treat disease, they can also cause serious gastrointestinal damage. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study demonstrated that aspirin increases the risk of gastrointestinal injury in elderly patients by 60%, with a significantly higher probability of lower gastrointestinal injury compared with upper gastrointestinal injury, making this a major clinical concern that requires urgent attention in diagnosis and treatment.

Sofatone, an important gastrointestinal mucosal protective agent, exerts its therapeutic effects through multiple mechanisms, including elevating prostaglandin levels, inhibiting the release of inflammatory cytokines, stimulating mucus and bicarbonate secretion, improving mucosal blood flow, promoting cellular turnover, and stabilizing cell membranes. It is indicated for the treatment of acute gastritis and acute exacerbations of chronic gastritis. In cases of NSAID-induced gastrointestinal mucosal injury, Sofatone acts both on the surface and in depth to counteract damaging factors, enhance defensive mechanisms, and comprehensively repair the injured gastrointestinal mucosa. In recent years, Professor Chen Xin’s research group has conducted numerous prospective studies on this topic, the results of which have demonstrated that Sofatone can effectively prevent and treat NSAID-induced gastrointestinal mucosal injury by activating the p62/Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant stress pathway and modulating the gut microbiota. Consequently, Sofatone holds great potential for clinical management of gastrointestinal mucosal injuries, particularly those associated with intestinal epithelial inflammation, and may emerge as a promising candidate drug for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

Professor Zhao Qiu highly commended the research findings of the team at Tianjin General Hospital. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are currently in high clinical demand and widely used; however, they also carry a risk of gastrointestinal mucosal injury, particularly intestinal mucosal damage, for which existing therapeutic regimens remain relatively limited. Professor Chen Xin’s research provides newer and more effective solutions for selecting clinical treatment strategies, managing patients with intestinal mucosal injury, and improving their quality of life.

Wuhan Qirui Pharmaceutical has long been committed to the research and development of gastrointestinal products, closely following cutting-edge advancements in this field to address unmet clinical diagnostic and therapeutic needs. The company also aspires to deepen collaboration with more experts and scholars, further enhancing its R&D capabilities, building a robust evidence base, and continuing to deliver high-quality products that benefit Chinese patients and contribute to the advancement of China’s healthcare system.
