Specialized Academic Lecture: Early Intervention in the Treatment of Liver Cirrhosis and Management of Blood Ammonia

Wuhan Qirui Pharmaceutical is participating in this grand event with its flagship product, Ruigan® Ornithine Aspartate, and has organized a symposium themed “ Early Intervention in the Treatment of Liver Cirrhosis and Ammonia Management A special report was delivered, with Professor Xu Xiaoyuan, Chairman of the Liver Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and from Peking University First Hospital, serving as the chair of the session, and Professor Nan Yuemin, Incoming Chairman of the Liver Disease Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and from the Third Hospital of Hebei Medical University, as the speaker. The venue was packed, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

In the past, treatment for liver cirrhosis mainly focused on Etiology Management and Results Management While the primary focus remains on these aspects, challenges persist, including the need to improve antiviral response rates, inadequate control of fatty liver progression, and frequent disease flares in decompensated cirrhosis. Accordingly, in this lecture, Professor Nan Yuemin emphasized the importance of monitoring the progression of chronic liver disease toward cirrhosis— Process Management This concept is discussed in particular with a focus on blood ammonia as the therapeutic target. Ammonia exerts systemic toxicity, and shifting the intervention point upstream to various stages of chronic hepatitis while emphasizing early management of blood ammonia carries significant clinical implications; moreover, it is proposed that ornithine aspartate can be used for therapeutic intervention.

Professor Nan Yuemin further presented robust evidence-based support for the therapeutic benefits of ornithine aspartate in the management of chronic liver diseases, demonstrating that its four distinct mechanisms of action lead to significant improvements in key disease-related parameters across a range of hepatic conditions, including NAFLD, steatohepatitis, viral hepatitis, and cirrhosis.

In his summary of the lecture, Professor Xu Xiaoyuan expressed the hope that, through continued collective efforts, China will place greater emphasis on primary and secondary prevention of MHE and HE, actively advance the earlier initiation of treatment for liver cirrhosis, and thereby improve clinical outcomes and prognosis.

In the management of chronic liver diseases and cirrhosis, healthcare professionals should adhere to the principle of prioritizing prevention while integrating prevention with treatment; implement the diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines and pharmacological standards outlined in clinical practice consensus documents; and reinforce the health-management approach of early diagnosis, early treatment, and early recovery. At the same time, industry partners are encouraged to support medical institutions in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered, service-driven care across the entire disease trajectory, thereby contributing to the achievement of the Healthy China 2030 initiative.
